SIXTEEN

Max took Cole, Luke, Kade, Sidney, and me to lunch. He suggested a golf outing after, but that held little appeal for me.

“Why don’t you guys go golfing,” I said when Sidney reacted with the sort of enthusiasm I’d rarely seen from him. He obviously wanted to go, and I didn’t blame him.

“We don’t have to golf,” Max countered. “I just thought Sidney might want to see the Galveston Country Club. It’s a beautiful course.”

“No, you guys should have fun. All of you.”

Cole shot me an odd look. “What are you going to do?”

“Did I say I was going to do anything?” The question came out shriller than I anticipated.

“Geez.” Cole made a face. “You’re a terrible actress. Either that or I’ve become adept at reading you.”

“She’s not very believable right now,” Luke countered. “What are you up to?”

I hated that they all knew me well enough to ascertain I was covering. There was nothing I could get past any of them. “I thought I would head to the pier.” I avoided eye contact.

“Why?” Kade asked. “What do you think you’re going to find out there?”

“I just want to look around. I’m not asking you to go with me.”

“I feel I have to go with you,” he argued. “You won’t be safe there alone.”

“You should go golfing with your father and Sidney. It will be a bonding exercise.”

“But…” Kade glanced between Max and Cole before shaking his head. “I don’t want you being on your own.”

Irritation bubbled up, but before I could snap at him, Cole took over the conversation.

“How about the four of you go golfing and get some bonding in. It will be good for you. And I’ll go with Poet,” he suggested.

I was surprised by the offer. “Don’t you want to golf?”

“Actually, I prefer the idea of spending time with you.”

“Since when?”

He grinned at me. “Why are you so suspicious? I’m allowed to want to spend time with my favorite girl.”

“I’m his favorite boy, so I’ll allow him to say that and not freak out,” Luke said. “Besides, I want to golf. If he decides to go with us, that’s a five-some and it will be an issue.”

I couldn’t hold back my laugh. “I’m glad you’ve given this some thought.”

“I’d rather spend time with you,” Cole assured me. He looked at Kade. “Go golfing with your father. Sidney is like your father-in-law. You should spend some time together as a group. I won’t let anything happen to her.”

Kade gave a tight smile. “I appreciate that, but what if you run into the Nix?”

“We’ll be okay,” I promised.

Kade flicked his eyes to Max. “What do you think?”

Max, ever practical, shrugged. “Poet can take care of herself. She’s managed to amplify Cole’s powers in the past. There’s nothing to worry about if they’re together.”

I could think of a few things to worry about, but I kept them to myself.

“If the Nix comes after them, they can burn it,” Max continued. “I’m sure they’ll be fine.”

Kade didn’t look convinced, but he nodded.
